2008 Santa Julia “Organica” Torrontés, Mendoza, Argentina, tasted 9/3/2009, $10.50. A lovely nose of orange peel with floral notes. Good fruit with medium length on a nice finish. A somewhat simple, refreshing quaff. (Distributed by Joshua with Heidelberg) Raymond Rating = 86 points

2007 Santa Julia “Organica” Chardonnay, Mendoza, Argentina, very lightly oaked, 70% stainless steel, tasted 9/3/2009, $10.50. Persimmon and tropical fruits on the nose. Fair fruit with medium length, though not very complex. (Distributed by Joshua with Heidelberg) Raymond Rating = 83 points

2008 Santa Julia Pinot Noir, Mendoza, Argentina, sustainable but not organic, tasted 9/3/2009, $10.50. Violets, leather, and lightly earthy notes. Good fruit, velvety tannins, and medium length on a nice finish. A very good value in Pinot Noir. (Distributed by Joshua with Heidelberg) Raymond Rating = 86 points

2008 Santa Julia “Organica” Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina, tasted 9/3/2009, $10.50. Some initial “burnt match” smell which improved with air, red fruits, and spicy highlights on the nose. . Good fruit, light complexity, and medium length with soft tannins persisting on the finish. (Distributed by Joshua with Heidelberg) Raymond Rating = 85 points

2008 Santa Julia “Organica” Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina, tasted 9/3/2009, $10.50. Aromas of cassis with herbal notes. Good fruit, though a little soft and short. (Distributed by Joshua with Heidelberg) Raymond Rating = 84 points

2005 Chateau D’Argadens Red Bordeaux, AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, by Maison Sichel, 55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, France, 14% alcohol, $13.75 at Twisted Cork, tasted 8/20/2009. The very nice nose of earth, plums, spice, and some cedar continued to open with air developing additional aromas of tobacco and rose petals. It is well-structured with good fruit, some complexity, and a nice finish. Though drinking nicely now, it will continue to hold together for a few years. A very good value for a red Bordeaux of this quality. The Raymond Rating = 88 points.

Re: First Thursday, September 2009 Wine Sampling

Hello Raymond my name is Paul
Have you tried 2008 Douglas Hill Cabernet Sauvignon?
I got it for less than $2 a bottle after (4 bottles 10%off) deal at Stater Bros.
But being a newbie, I'm not sure how to describe it's taste. Any plan on trying it in the future?
I'm learning wine tasting by buying wines and drink it, describing them on my own words
and then compare them with your review if there is one. Thank you for your time and thank you for great wine reviews.

Re: First Thursday, September 2009 Wine Sampling

Paul, I have tried earlier vintages of the Douglas Hill Cabernet (not the 2008) and found all of their red wines to be excellent values; though I've never seen it for the price you got it at. You stole that sucker! Congratulations! Keep tasting; that's the only way to learn. Raymond
